Getting started:

Immediately after the registration deadline (6 May) participants will begin to acquaint themselves with the geography, history, culture and economy of Cabo Verde. Relevant literature and web sites will be recommended.

Project work

Participants will engage in close cooperation until they split up into groups of 4 to 5 to work on specified assignments.

Assignment 1:
Promotion of the Project

Once participants have acquired a good understanding of the purpose of the project they also need to acquaint themselves with requirements of the media, of interactive internet communication and the conceivable motivation of affluent benefactors.
Various promotion lines are to be developed focussing on
1.1 mass media,
1.2 website visitors,
1.3 the project partners, namely the Associacão de Amizade Calheta - Deutsch-Wagram.

By developing the promotion lines special attention will be paid to interactivity much beyond traditional concepts and their screen-related limitations.

Assignment 2:
Enhancing Happyness

In harmony with the findings of happyness research one group of participants will develop a communication line with the sole purpose to make every benefactor a partner for further development. The elements of this communication line will be a combined mix of philosophy, stories from beneficiaries and symbols of thankfulness.

More than the results of Assignment 1 the value of the outcome of Assignment 2 will be a well considered concept, much like designing the "scaffolding that supports elements of the users' experience" (Takeshi Sunaga, Professor at the Information Design Department, Tama Art University, Tokyo: "What is it a designer should design? High added value in a new paradigm", AXIS 1997, May/June 2002).

Assignment 3:
Defining Educational Requirements

Educational requirements are to be defined with a focus on soft tourism, culture management and information design.
Graduates of partner schools who have studied these subjects will have learnt how to develop the infrastructure needed to attract visitors from far away, interested in the uniqueness of Cabo Verde and prepared to spend their money on excursions on the islands.
To complement readily available information design competence expertise of tourist management and insights into culture management will be provided by visiting experts.

The outcome of Assignment 3 is expected to be some sort of checklist which may be used as a tool for drafting introductory courses and to assess partner schools which provide goal oriented vocational education.

The long-term purpose of the project: to make such education available to Cabo Verdian juveniles who wish to escape unemployment.

Quality Assurance

To develop the Summer Academy very much like an innovative real life project each group will be requested to nominate one of its members to act as "peer reviewer".
The peer reviewer's function will be to safeguard that high quality results are achieved within given deadlines.

Post Summer Academy Virtual Classroom:
25 July - 3 August 2005

It is envisaged that the time in Bozen/Bolzano might not be sufficient to develop and finish the project to everybody's satisfaction. Therefore, participants are asked to consider spending some additional time back home for the completion and proper documentation of their work.

What participants will learn

Participants will learn to understand fairly complex interrelationships between the resources of a country and interests which govern their exploitation, the capabilities of its inhabitants and the challenges to be met by those who aspire to better living conditions.

Based on a visionary concept participants will learn that success depends on optimized networked communication across cultures and subject areas and that much of what communication entails is governed by emotions.

The Summer Academy will offer participants a purpose-driven real life experience right through the process of problem analysis, co-designing, promotion and documentation.
